In addition to painting and photographing, Dennis Papa crafts custom furniture and wood carvings from
his Virginia workshop. His wood work includes depictions of game fish and birds that are hand-carved and painted as free standing
sculpture or integrated into his handmade furniture. Furniture designs consider not only the piece’s end use, but also
how its lines and surfaces will merge and cast shadows to enhance the appearance and proportion. Wood is often salvaged or
selected from domestic sources of eastern yellow pine, chestnut, cherry, poplar, aspen and maple. Furniture pieces can be
composed of a mix of woods and often contain live edges, burls and imperfections, all elements that evoke the natural beauty
and diversity of a hardwood forest. Dennis employs a three-step process of hand sanding, planing and scraping to reveal the
full depth and grain of the wood. Pieces are finished with hand-rubbed layers of stains, Danish oil and protective coatings.
